Computer Laboratory

University of Cambridge

The main university servers were originally housed in the Arup Building a Brutalist icon designed by Sir Philip Dowson of Arup Associates in the late sixties

The University Computing Service and the research led Computer Laboratory were also located in the building before their move to West Cambridge in 2013. Extreme pressure on space in the late 1980s led to NHA being commissioned to extend the teaching, research and staff accommodation on a very difficult and restricted site beneath the East tower of the Arup Building.

As part of the refurbishment of the reinvention of the Arup Building as the David Attenborough Building, NHA were pleased to be able to restore the building to its original form – demolishing the extension and creating a new public space with artwork by Ackroyd and Harvey within its footprint.
