Bristol Cathedral Choir School

With accommodation ranging from medieval ecclesiastical buildings integral to the Cathedral, to a recently constructed school and office building around College Square, Bristol Cathedral Choir needed to reorganize and expand their estate to accommodate a rising pupil roll.

A project demanded a combination of judicious re-modelling and refurbishment combined with some new-build – the Cresswell Building which houses new kitchen and dining facilities, a multi-purpose hall and teaching spaces for art. Construction work was undertaken in a series of carefully planned phases ensuring that the school was able to operate with minimum disruption throughout.

The key outcome was the provision of defined curriculum bases for each of the school’s five faculties. This allowed more efficient staff and student movement across the campus, and moved the majority of teaching accommodation from the original Cathedral buildings to the new College Square side.

Our students and staff are all delighted with the Cresswell Centre – it's modern, well equipped and stylish, yet it fits beautifully into its historic surroundings in College Square. The development provides a sense of space that is truly rare in city centre schools.

Sensitive response

Working in close proximity to the Cathedral and Bristol Central Library – both Grade 1 listed buildings – required a sensitive response to a complex brief and a detailed engagement process. In addition to the local authority the proposals were presented to and approved by English Heritage, The Conservation Advisory Panel, Bristol Urban Design Forum and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings amongst others.
