Student Housing

University of Essex

The scheme for 1200 student rooms follows the principles established in Nicholas Hare Architects’ development plan for the University’s existing 1960s campus.

The curved central street of the scheme runs parallel to the main spine of academic buildings of the campus, to which it is linked by transverse paths.

The design consists of five interconnecting courts of which three are fully enclosed and two are open to the landscape. The tree-lined central route culminates in a large oval space formed by crescents surrounding mature oak trees.

Accommodation is arranged in houses with four rooms and a kitchen disposed around a central stair.
